Alex Pereira shows off massive 24-hour weight gain of 25lb after tipping scales for UFC 307 main event against Khalil Rountree Jr

Reading Time: 3 minutes

After making weight at 205lb for his latest world title defence, Alex Pereira has ballooned up in time for fight night.

The light-heavyweight champion isn’t cutting nearly as much as he used to during his middleweight days, when he had to get to 185lb from a base weight approaching 230lb. But he still has to make sacrifices before his fights, and did the same ahead of UFC 307 tonight.

He faces Khalil Rountree Jr in the main event in Salt Lake City, and appears to be relaxed in the final moments; enjoying a meal with friends and family. In a new video, he showed off his home life, and even jumped on the scale for a new fight weight.

In order to fight for a UFC title, the fighters must weigh in exactly at the limit of their weight class, which for light-heavyweights is 205lb. Non-title fights allow a one pound addition to that weight.

Alex Pereira has never had trouble making the weight, and even lost 20 more pounds back when he started in the promotion. Meanwhile, Rountree has stayed in shape after infamously cutting down from 305lb at his lowest ebb in life before pursuing a career in MMA.

Both men likely have to struggle through a weight cut before their title fights, although neither are doing it to a drastic level. Despite that, Pereira did show off that he does go through drastic body changes during his fight days.

In a video on his Instagram story, he jumped on the scales to show off that he is now weighing 104.3kg, which amounts to just under 230lb. This means a weight gain of a massive 25lb in around 24 hours after weighing in for his fight at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

Alex Pereira wants to cut down to middleweight again after UFC 307 title defence

While many feel that he should go up to heavyweight and chase either Jon Jones or Tom Aspinall, it seems that Pereira is keen to go back down. After a legendary feud with Israel Adesanya he came up to 205lb, and hadn’t looked back for the past year as he fought four times in 11 years.

However, since Dricus Du Plessis won the belt from Sean Strickland and defended it against Adesanya, it appears that Pereira is keen to test his skills against the South African. “I would like it to be at middleweight.” Pereira told The Schmo of a fight with the brash champion.

“I told everybody that I just needed a break from 185, from all those weight cuts, I feel good, I feel healthy right now… I think I can do more fights [at middleweight].”
