‘The police call my house’… Nate Diaz tells incredible story of the street fight that started his MMA journey… ‘There was 300 people at the park’

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Nate Diaz is undeniably one of the most popular competitors in UFC history, but his career in combat sports may never have materialized had he not gotten into a street fight in the park.

The Stockton brawler has made a reputation for his gangster-esque attitude and sublime Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills.

In his remarkable career, Nate Diaz has reached dazzling heights, defeating Conor McGregor and cementing his place as one of the most famous MMA fighters of all time.

But he may never have achieved anything had his brother, Nick Diaz, not talked him into training in martial arts after he produced a less-than-stellar performance in a street fight.

In an interview on Bradley Martyn’s Raw Talk, Diaz said: “I remember I got into a fight with a kid in like fifth period. We got into a ‘f**k you-f** you fight’. And all these people know my brother and all my homies, and they’re like, ‘You gonna whoop this fool’s a**’?

“So, we meet up after school, and we’re walking, I get to the park, and there’s 300 people at the park. My brother’s there, all my homies are there. Pressure was on from the beginning.

“I’m fighting this guy in the park. It felt like 30 minutes, but it was probably five minutes; it felt like the longest fight. I’m fighting this guy in front of everybody.

“I didn’t win, he didn’t win, we just socked each other in the face 100 times each. We go home, I’m p***ed.

“The police call my house. My mom’s like, ‘You’re suspended already’. My brother’s like, ‘Do you want to come to the gym with me, I’m heading to training right now’. I was like, ‘I’m good, I’m gonna chill’. He’s like, ‘You better get off your a** with that s****y performance earlier at the park’.

“I went to the gym with him, and I started training right there.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Will Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz 3 ever happen?

With three years having now passed since Conor McGregor last set foot in the octagon, and two since Diaz defeated Tony Ferguson, it looks unlikely that the pair will ever cross paths again.

However, having shared possibly the greatest feud the UFC has ever seen, the rivals will always be linked to one another.

And Diaz’s coach, Cesar Gracie, is adamant that now is the right time to make the third fight.

He recently delivered a compelling argument for why the world’s premier MMA organization should do everything it takes to make the trilogy happen.
