Upcoming HoK Championship taking place in Indonesia
The Esports World Cup has wrapped, with Honor of Kings’ appearance seeing KPL crowned champs
They’ll join LGD Gaming in taking home a share of the $3m prize pool
And that’s not all, as right around the corner is the main Championship in Indonesia
With the Esports World Cup now officially wrapped, Honor of Kings’ own event saw Korean competitors KPL Dream Team crowned as champs. They and LGD Gaming will both take home the lion’s share of a $3 million prize pool at the inaugural event, which took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
But this isn’t even close to the end of the esports season of 2024 for Honor of Kings. The upcoming 2024 Honor of Kings Championship, set to take place in October, will pit 16 of the best teams from around the globe against one another. Taking place in Indonesia, it’ll feature all these teams duking it out in the hit MOBA for a shot at a $1m prize pool.
You may remember that the Esports World Cup is the first of its kind, spinning out from Saudi Arabia’s Gamers8 event. It’s attracted attendees from numerous high-profile games like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire and, of course, Honor of Kings.
Will the Esports World Cup stick?
It seems that Honor of Kings’ appearance is a bit of a double-edged sword. Because on the one hand, it’s immediately followed by the ‘main’ championship in October, but that itself has a smaller prize pool on offer.
It’s been clear from the start, of course, that the Esports World Cup is as much a PR exercise by devs and the government of Saudi Arabia to turn the country into an esports capital, but will it work? Or is it just an expensive white elephant?
